Joey Daccord outduels Connor Hellebuyck as Kraken beat Jets, 3-0
Published in Hockey
The Kraken finished a six-game road trip 2-2-2 with another eye-catching win against the Winnipeg Jets, who won the Presidents’ Trophy last season with the league’s best record.
When one of the best active goalies in the world is at the other end of the ice, it’s always tempting to compare. That got easier and easier as the clock wound down and Joey Daccord, not Connor Hellebuyck, neared the 32-save shutout. Still missing several key players, the Kraken managed a 3-0 victory.
Hellebuyck, not Daccord, is nearly locked for Team USA heading into the Milano-Cortina Games in February. Daccord would just love to be included at all.
Daccord was pulled from his last outing in Philadelphia after allowing five goals and bounced back convincingly with his fifth career clean sheet.
It wasn’t a bad night for Hellebuyck either. The Kraken scored more goals on the empty net than on him. He made 25 stops, then Jaden Schwartz and Jordan Eberle found the empty cage while Hellebuyck was pulled for the extra attacker.
Schwartz scored Seattle’s only goal of a 4-1 loss to Washington Capitals on Tuesday. He then took care of Seattle’s first two tallies Thursday.
Jani Nyman didn’t appear on the scoresheet, but he played a part in setting up Schwartz’s first-period goal. Nyman went to the net and distracted defenseman Luke Schenn by giving the Winnipeg player a big back to cross-check. At the same time, Schwartz was cutting to the other side of the crease, ready to pick up Shane Wright’s rebound and deposit it.
John Hayden became a healthy scratch as winger Mason Marchment returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday’s game against the Washington Capitals. Marchment engaged in a little second-period playfighting. He feigned a punch in the face of Jets defenseman Logan Stanley, dropped his arm and cracked a smile instead.
Jared McCann missed a third straight game with a lower-body injury and Berkly Catton continued to fill in for him. Matty Beniers tried to set Catton up for his first NHL goal late in the third period, but the 19-year-old sent it directly into Hellebuyck’s pads.
Lane Lambert’s nephew Brad, who was part of the Seattle Thunderbirds’ Memorial Cup run in 2023, played his second game of the season for the Winnipeg Jets. Lambert’s mother and Brad’s grandmother Merilyn, whom Lane described as in her late 80s, was shown in the stands supporting both.
