LAS VEGAS — “Hacks,” the Emmy-winning HBO Max comedy that follows a legendary Las Vegas comedian and her young assistant/co-writer/antagonist, is coming to an end.

“We are incredibly honored to be ending ‘Hacks’ this season exactly as we pitched it seven years ago,” creators Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky and Lucia Aniello said in a statement posted on X.

“In the aftermath of mistaken and unflattering news reports that she passed away,” the season’s logline reads, “Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) return to Las Vegas more determined than ever to secure Deborah’s legacy as a comedian.”

Over its first four seasons, “Hacks” was nominated for 62 Emmys, winning 12, including best comedy in 2024. Smart was named best actress in a comedy series for each season, with Einbinder winning best supporting actress in a comedy in 2025.

“A lot of people are like, ‘Oh, it’s this person, or it’s that person,’” Downs told the Review-Journal in 2021 about the inspiration for Deborah Vance. “We always say, because it’s true, that it’s an amalgamation of people like Phyllis Diller and Elaine May, and we always name Debbie Reynolds.”

The fifth and final season of “Hacks” will begin April 9.
