Television Q&A: Will 'Ballard' return for a second season?
Published in Entertainment News
You have questions. I have some answers.
Q: Will there be a second season of “Ballard”?
A: The series based on Michael Connelly’s novels about police detective Renee Ballard (Maggie Q) has been picked up for a second season on Prime Video — so viewers can see the cliffhanger ending of Season 1 resolved.
Viewers may also know that “Ballard’s” first season included appearances by Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch, another Connelly creation, who previously had his own series on Prime Video. And there’s more Bosch coming. MGM+ has ordered “Bosch: Start of Watch,” a prequel series starring Cameron Monaghan (“Shameless,” “Gotham”) as Harry in 1991, at the start of his police career. Production will begin in 2026.
Q: Next year is the 100th anniversary of the highway Route 66. Is anyone planning to broadcast the TV series of the same name next year?
A: I don’t know of plans, but you don’t have to wait until 2026 to see the 1960-64 series, which is available on DVD and on streaming services including Tubi, the Roku Channel and Prime Video.
While “Route 66” bore the name of that famous highway, the episodes could veer from that path. Still, its stories centered on two young men having adventures as they drove around the country. It was noteworthy for shooting episodes all over as well. George Maharis and Martin Milner starred at first, then Maharis left and was replaced by Glenn Corbett.
Q: Years ago, there was a miniseries called "World War III" starring David Soul, where a rogue Soviet general led an invasion of Alaska. Oddly, it has never been rebroadcast. I wonder if the subject matter was too sensitive or predictive. What do you say?
A: The two-part NBC drama starring Soul, Rock Hudson, Brian Keith and Cathy Lee Crosby did get replayed; YouTube even has a commercial for a 1991 telecast on TBS. While I have not found a recent airing, there was a DVD release in 2012.
Q: What happened to Netflix’s “Babylon Berlin”? I was all in for three seasons on this great production and they discontinued showing further seasons, yet Google says extended seasons were made and shown in Europe.
A: Four seasons of the crime drama set in Berlin in the 1920s and '30s are available on the streamer MHz Choice. A fifth season is coming.
Q I’m so disappointed “Countdown” with Jensen Ackles wasn’t picked up for a second season. They left us on a cliffhanger. Any chance they could do a two-hour wrap-up movie to solve the current case?
A: Everything I have read says the series is done — no second season, no movie. Although Ackles is very popular, ScreenRant noted that the reviews were “not strong,” a change in studio leadership may not have helped and “global viewership numbers” may also have factored in the cancellation.
