Online chatter about Trump's Kansas visit is as much about Trump as Roger Marshall
Published in Political News
President Donald Trump’s slated appearance near Wichita, Kansas, on Monday to rally support for Republican Sen. Roger Marshall’s reelection bid has stirred up both anger and excitement among hundreds of Kansans who are talking about the presidential visit online.
In that raucous public square known as Reddit, anti-Trumpers are planning protests, evidence that Trump should not expect an overwhelmingly enthusiastic welcome in the traditionally red Sunflower State.
The campaign stop is set for Heartland Credit Union Arena in Park City, Kansas, just outside Wichita, it was announced Friday morning.
On chatty Next Door, Kansas neighbors are arguing over Trump’s effectiveness — and failures — as president.
On Baby Boomer Central — Facebook — users in Kansas are encouraging each other to early-vote on Monday as Trump visits.
On TikTok, the snark is strong.
As he stumps for Republicans at rallies across the country, Trump is telling his followers to pretend that he is on mid-term ballots.
People seem to be taking him at his word.
In the social media chatter about his Kansas rally, Trump and his job as president are as much — sometimes more — at the heart of the discourse as Marshall.
Consider: Both the Crawford County Republicans and Montgomery County Democrats announced the rally on their respective Facebook pages with gusto, for very different reasons.
What the Republicans wrote: “Don’t miss this chance to see the President in person!”
The Democrats wrote: “He’s coming to Kansas!”
Some people seem confused by what Trump meant by a “a Kansas Style Rally” in his lengthy social media post announcing the visit.
“I will be having a Kansas Style Rally, in Roger’s Honor, very soon. See you there!” Trump wrote.
“Could someone tell me what exactly is a Kansas style rally?” one Reddit user asked.
“In my head it’s sunflowers, wheat, tornados and witches, but I don’t think that’s what Trump meant for Marshall.”
“Who’s excited,” asked the Wichitawesome Facebook page which has 91,000 followers.
Most people who responded said they were not.
“I’d rather prep for a Colonoscopy I don’t have scheduled.”
“That will be awesome, I hope the city shows its patriotism and shows up.”
“So we protesting….?”
Democrats consider Trump’s visit a signal that Republicans are worried about Marshall’s race against the Rev. Adam Hamilton in a matchup grabbing national attention.
If he wins, Hamilton would make history as the first Democratic senator elected in Kansas since the 1930s.
Republican leaders believe Trump’s appearance will motivate the president’s supporters to vote. Across the country, some Republican candidates have distanced themselves from Trump and his current low poll standing.
The latest Fox News survey released Wednesday showed disapproval of the job Trump is doing has reached 77% on inflation, 70% on the economy, 69% on tariffs and 64% on foreign policy.
Kansas, which Trump won Kansas with 57% of the vote in 2024, is ruby red in its politics.
But ahead of the rally, anti-Trump voices on social media appear to outnumber those of supporters — like the woman on Facebook who wrote: “... I’m going to support and to see the president. If the negative Nellie’s are there.. I will have my head on a swivel.”
Some folks rushed to Reddit to plot protest strategies as soon as Trump announced the trip.
“I’m near the flight line into McConnell (Air Force Bace). Anyone know where I can get a 27’ (BLEEP) TRUMP banner I can put over my pool to show my love?” one Reddit user asked.
“Paint it on some plywood,” someone suggested.
“I really hope someone puts some on the pedestrian bridges on Kellogg,” said another, referencing Wichita’s major east-west highway.
Anti-Trumpers in Wichita are encouraging folks to attend the next No Kings Nationwide Day of Action on Saturday as a sort of rally warm-up. This fourth No Kings day promotes early voting.
“Ironically, the day he will be here is also the first day of early in-person voting. Please vote early people,” one Wichita woman encouraged on a Facebook thread where another person responded: “This country is headed in the same direction regardless who is in office.”
On its Facebook page, J’s Lounge, a Wichita gay bar, has invited people to its place at 1 p.m. Monday to make protest signs before the rally.
People signed up for the free rally tickets on the online RSVP page who planned not to use them, an attempt to leave seats empty in the arena.
“I got my tickets, unfortunately my couch and i have plans that day,” one man wrote on Reddit.
Note: This has been done before and doesn’t seem to achieve the goal.
Kansans have watched other Trump rallies and some wonder whether Trump will comment on Marshall’s, uh, rear view, as he did at a rally earlier this week when he admired the buttocks of Republican U.S. Senator Jon Husted in Ohio.
On Friday, TikTok user MsKnowledge Apologetic posted a message to Trump, referencing an incident at that same rally in which a protester wearing a “Release the Epstein Files” shirt was assaulted by crowd members.
“You know what, Trump?” she said. “I think if you would have spoke up last night or the other night when that woman got punched in the face and said, ‘we don’t do that,’ you might have been able to get Kansas, baby, you might have been able get Wichita, Kansas.
“But that (bleep) over for you now, bro. You might as well go on and turn the (bleep) around.”
The back-and-forth online discourse reveals that, despite the heat of the Marshall-Hamilton race, some frustrated Kansans plan to stay home on Election Day.
“It irritates me to no end to see so many in our community to say they’re not voting because ‘it won’t change anything,’” wrote one Facebook user in Wichita, who is Black.
“Historically individuals went thru hell and high water in an effort to give us the ability to vote and I damn sure am not wasting it!!!!”
