Jessie Buckley hailed Julia Roberts a "hero" as she beat her to the Golden Globe Award for Best Female Actor - Drama on Sunday (11.01.26).

The 36-year-old actress' performance in Hamnet saw her take the prize ahead of the Hollywood legend, who was shortlisted for After the Hunt, and she paid a heartfelt tribute to all her fellow nominees, including Jennifer Lawrence (Die, My Love), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), Tessa Thompson (Hedda), and Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby).

Speaking on stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, Jessie said: "Oh my God, the incredible women I am honoured to stand beside in this category.

"Julia Roberts, you are a hero to us all, thank you. Jennifer, Renata, Eva, Tessa, I'd watch you any time, anywhere, you blow my mind.

"My husband - he's really been enjoying the free canapes and cocktails, so thank you for having us along.

"This is a real, real honour, I love what I do and I love being part of this industry."

As she thanked the cast and crew of Hamnet, Jessie humorously paid particular tribute to a grip, who had happily made soup for everyone on set.

She said: "This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in but thank you Golden Globes, thank you Focus and everybody who supported this film. .

"It was such an extraordinary set to be a part of because we were telling the story of the most famous Brit who ever lived. And we had a Chinese director--lots of Irish, and mostly Polish crew, besides our British family.

"I'd really like to thank our grip, Tomak, because during shooting he started to disappear a little bit and I found him one day at the back of his truck and he was chopping up potatoes, onions and meat and he was making - he'd brought a giant cast iron pot over from Poland - he was making soup, and the soup started turning up on set.

"It was delicious, so thanks Tomak for bringing your pot to set."

Meanwhile, Wagner Moura became the first male actor from Brazil to win a Golden Globe, securing the Best Male Actor - Drama prize for The Secret Agent.

He paid tribute to "genius" director Kleber Mendonça Filhos and described The Secret Agent - which had won the Best Non-English Language Film award earlier int he evening - as "a film about memory, or the lack of memory, and generational trauma."

He added: "I think that if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too. So this goes to the ones who are sticking with their values in difficult moments."

Wagner beat off competition from Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein), Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), Michael B Jordan (Sinners) and Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere) to take the prize.
