Ellen DeGeneres says she decided not to return to the U.S. from the U.K. because of Donald Trump and plans to remarry there if the Supreme Court rolls back same-sex marriage rights.

The comedian and former talk show host — among several celebrity donors who supported Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign — confirmed that she and her wife Portia de Rossi left their home country for the U.K. during the 2024 presidential election and decided to stay when the MAGA leader won re-election for a second term.

“Yes. We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here,’” she told British broadcaster Richard Bacon during a conversation on Sunday.

Earlier this month, DeGeneres took to Instagram to support Rosie O’Donnell after Trump threatened to revoke her citizenship. O’Donnell, who has a near-20-year-feud with the ex “Apprentice” star, revealed in March that she had packed up and headed to Ireland just days before the Republican president began his second term on Jan. 20.

DeGeneres has been keeping a relatively low profile after ending her talk show in 2022 amid allegations of a toxic workplace environment. She later headlined a final comedy tour across the U.S.

Last year, the couple purchased a “part-time house” in the Cotswolds area of south central England where they planned to spend four months out of the year. But after Trump became president again, the couple made the permanent decision.

Calling her house “absolutely beautiful,” DeGeneres, who came out as gay in 1997, said it was the first time the pair saw snow there this past winter.

“We love it here,” she added. “Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”

The “Ellen” star continued: “We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture, everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life. It’s clean. Everything here is just better, the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”

There may be more wedding plans underway, too, for the couple who first wed in 2008.

“The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,” DeGeneres said in reference to a June call by southern Baptist delegates for a gay marriage ban. “They’re trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it. Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we’re going to get married here.”
