Five people are believed to be dead after a shooting at a Bend, Oregon, elementary school, law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.

The shooter was also shot and killed, although it’s unclear whether the shooter was among the five people authorities believe have died so far.

Police responded to Silver Rail Elementary School after receiving reports of an active shooter, according to Bend Police. Multiple 911 callers reported a person outside the school shooting into a car around 12:59 p.m.

Two people were transported to St. Charles, a nearby hospital, for treatment of injuries.

The shooter was shot and killed inside the school, possibly by a bystander, although police are still investigating. There is no other information on the shooter or additional casualties, police said.

Bend Police will lead an investigation into the shooting.

The elementary school, which has 400 students and 40 staff members, is under lockdown, and reunification sites for students and families have been established at Journey Church, 61303 S. Highway 97, near Goodwill and Dairy Queen.

Washington lawmakers reacted to the shooting on social media.

“Truly no words for the absolute horror of what unfolded at Silver Rail Elementary today,” wrote Democratic U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene, who represents Washington's 1st District. “Schools should be safe havens for our children, not places of unthinkable violence.”
