Argentine President Javier Milei announced late Friday that his former spokesman Manuel Adorni will be his new Cabinet chief, as the libertarian leader seeks improved ties with Congress.

The move marks the first shake-up of his senior aides following a decisive victory in midterm elections last Sunday. Adorni replaces Guillermo Francos, who offered his resignation in a post on social media.

In a brief statement, Milei’s office thanked Francos for his service, and described the switch as “a change that responds to the election result.”

The statement also signaled that Milei aims to be more coalition-minded going forward.

The Cabinet chief is an influential negotiator with provincial governors and other stakeholders who pull many of the strings in Congress. Adorni will be Milei’s third Cabinet chief so far, after Francos replaced Nicolas Posse last year.

Adorni had been slated to become a city legislator in Buenos Aires in December, after the libertarians won first place in the local race last May.

Signs of political pragmatism will be greeted as good news to investors who are hoping Milei can form consensus to pass lasting free-market reforms after months of repeated setbacks. In the months leading up to the election, the opposition overturned multiple Milei vetoes that imperiled the fiscal responsibility that forms the backbone of his economic program.

“I always said the construction of the new Cabinet would be associated with the new composition of Congress and the stakeholders I need to implement (reforms),” Milei said in a TV interview the night of the election. “I’m going to call on the best to achieve the results I need.”
