SAN JOSE, California — The number of tech industry job cuts in the Bay Area has already topped the number for all of 2025, totals that are exacerbated by fresh downsizing disclosures by PayPal, Amazon and Synopsys.

Through the start of September, tech companies have revealed their decisions to eliminate 12,947 jobs in the Bay Area, this news organization’s review of dozens of WARN notices on file with the state Employment Development Department shows.

That number is 27% higher than the 10,170 disclosed job cuts by the tech industry reported to the state EDD for all of 2025, last year’s WARN notices show.

San Jose-based PayPal, in the most recently revealed layoffs, has decided to eliminate 251 jobs at its headquarters complex on North First Street, the digital payments platform reported to the state EDD.

The PayPal downsizing arrives on the heels of the company’s announcement that it would reorganize into what it hopes will be a more efficient organization.

The company envisions a structure with three businesses: checkout solutions and PayPal, consumer financial services and Venmo, and payment services and crypto, PayPal stated in an announcement in April.

“To accelerate growth and unlock our full potential, we need to recommit to our fundamentals,” PayPal Chief Executive Officer Enrique Lores said. He added that these fundamentals are “getting much closer to the consumer, aligning the company around three strong businesses, simplifying how we work, sharpening accountability and prioritizing operational excellence.”

PayPal said its latest layoffs became effective Sept. 1, the WARN notice disclosed. The cutbacks were expected to be permanent.

At the end of 2025, PayPal employed 23,800 people worldwide, which was down 2.5% from the 24,400 the tech company employed at the end of 2024, federal regulatory filings show.

So far during 2026, Menlo Park-based Meta Platforms has slashed the most jobs in the Bay Area, based on its disclosed intentions to eliminate 3,715 positions in the region, a review of the company’s WARN filings shows.

Amazon has disclosed plans to chop 917 Bay Area jobs, Cisco Systems has revealed its intention to ax 706 jobs, Oracle America reported plans to jettison 652 jobs and LinkedIn has decided to cut 585 jobs, according to the WARN notices filed in 2026.

Rounding out the 10 tech companies with the largest Bay Area layoffs so far in 2026: Intuit, 543 job cuts; eBay, 469 staffing reductions; Lucid Group, 455 layoffs; Walmart, 394 job cuts; Visa, 320 layoffs.
